RESEARCH AND STANDARDS FAQ
COBIT, first released in 1996, is an IT governance tool that has changed how IT professionals work. Linking information technology and control practices, COBIT consolidates and harmonizes standards from prominent global sources into a critical resource for management, control professionals and auditors. As such, COBIT represents an authoritative, up-to-date control framework, a set of generally accepted control objectives, and a complimentary product that enables the easy application of the Framework and Control Objectives - called the Audit Guidelines. COBIT applies to enterprise-wide information systems, including personal computers, mini- computers, mainframes and distributed environments. It is based on the philosophy that IT resources need to be managed by a set of naturally grouped processes in order to provide the pertinent and reliable information an organization needs to achieve its objectives. With the addition of the Management Guidelines, COBIT now supports self-assessment of strategic organizational status, identification of actions to improve IT processes and monitoring of the performance of these IT processes. Since the 1st edition of COBIT was released in 1996 it has been sold and implemented in over 100 countries throughout the world.

COBIT 3rd Edition has been enhanced through the revision/addition of The Management Guidelines, which provide maturity models, critical success factors, key goal indicators and key performance indicators for all of COBIT's 34 IT processes. These guidelines provide management with tools that allow self-assessment and choices to be made for control implementation and improvement over information and related technology. The guidelines were developed by a worldwide panel of 40 security and control experts, IT management and performance management professionals, industry analysts and Academics New material generated by the increase (from 36 to 41) of global de facto and de jure primary reference documents 45 new or revised detailed control objectives.
The Executive Summary, Framework, Control Objectives, Audit Guidelines (for ISACA members only) and Management Guidelines components of COBIT have been designated as an open standard, available for downloading through this web site. Open access to this material is being provided in order to make it easier for organizations worldwide to use and adopt COBIT and to tailor it to their own circumstances.
